A super sleazy 80's R&B artist I picked up at the most defunct and depressing record shop I have seen, it's a true Bed-Stuy gem (Birdell's). I think they messed up during the pressing because the instrumental side is much pitched down a bit from the vocal version.

The hook is great and the synths signature to the time, but I think the lyrics speak to me the most. The music can range from being incredibly brutal ("Fancy Dancer") to super tight, example ("Vera's Back"). I find it interesting that "Vera's Back," was recorded in 1978, which shows the earlier material had a different focus. Its that not that I find the focus any more musical than the 80's material, just stretched to a thinner tighter production style, with Dukish arranging, full band and the lack of a drum machine. The 80's material is about dense layered grooves.

There is no escaping "Under Your Spell," a bedroom tape that might actually make Prince smile. Mr. Simms writes grooves that run and run while holding onto a keen sense of psychedelia to roll it and make it edible.

Sexuality is strong with this one as well, which is illustrated on "X Rated." With orgasmic Oberheim swells, a perverse vocal track, and an ending fade that makes you wish you had the whole reel in your hands.

This is truly a record you're gonna want to check out.

Wicked Witch - Chaos 1978-86jogaloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02083424108891630686noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169323693275135900.post-49976519877061622922009-11-18T13:11:00.000-08:002009-11-18T13:25:19.993-08:00Spiders Webb - I Don't Know Whats On Your MindA long lost forgotten drummer, Spider Webb, put out this solo record in 1976. Joining him is female funk/studio legend Carol Kaye. This record brings fantastic disco grooves, reggae grooves, and a sweet soul cut that digs deep in the pocket.

This would be Spider Webb's only solo record, but he would continue to play on as a studio musician throughout the decade. "I Don't Know Whats On Your Mind," was released on fantasy records and was produced by Jeff Lane. Probably the most memorable tune of the LP would be "Juicy Fruit." Made super famous when it was sampled by Biggie for "Juicy," which appeared on "Ready to Die." While that maybe the only tune that will ring the familiar bell in your brainhead, its just one of an array of incredible dance songs.

Mtume's production style proves why he was one of the most sought after producers of the late 70's and 80's. He produced numerous records for Stephanie Mills (which may be Jogaloged very soon), also Donny Hathaway, Roy Ayers, and The Bar-kays. Not only does he have production credits, but also played percussion for Miles Davis in the early 70's. With all his experience he truly knew how to put a stellar band together and hit the feel right on the money. Enjoy the record and please shake your pants.

Mtume - Juicy Fruitjogaloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02083424108891630686noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169323693275135900.post-89210363841847952622009-02-24T19:47:00.000-08:002009-02-24T20:08:30.406-08:00Ron Carter - Parade
The hardest working man in show business, Ron Carter, appears on Jogalog. A sweet little record with Mr. Carter - Bass, Joe Henderson - Tenor, Chick Corea - piano, and Tony Williams - Drums. Horn arrangments by Wade Marcus, worked with Stevie Wonder, The Emotions, and Donald Byrd. Recorded in 1979 this not only shows off Carter's quartet arranging magic, but also Chick Corea takes a break from his fusion projects and delivers traditional chops.

The quartet blends beautifully with the shaping of the horn arrangments and allows the listener to break the walls of the studio and sit by an initimate occassion. Please enjoy a swingin side of Jogalog.

Ron Carter - Paradejogaloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02083424108891630686noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169323693275135900.post-10241917649712708802009-02-17T16:26:00.000-08:002009-02-17T16:57:03.940-08:00George Benson - Inside Love (So Personal) 12"
The 12" to support the LP, "In Your Eyes," is short and sweet. The real gem on here is the instrumental version of Inside Love (So Personal). When listening to the album I've always the tune to continue for another 3 minutes, and that's what you get. Dig into the cheese that can be Benson. The bass doesn't shy in the flavor department, it's spicy and a bit pissed off. Besides that you get the LP mix of Inside Love (So Personal) and a another tune called "In Search of a Dream," which is a signature example of the new smooth style Benson would come to be known for from '83 til present.

The instrumental cut is what you should really peak your attention.

George Benson - Inside Love (So Personal) 12" jogaloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02083424108891630686noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8169323693275135900.post-43848284479654069282009-02-03T15:39:00.000-08:002009-02-03T16:09:23.164-08:00Chuckii Booker - Chuckii
Chuckii was released in 1989, before the masses knew to what extent the New Jack movement would travel. Chuckii Booker was a prolific force in soul and R&B, but also in pushing production styles in the direction of what has now become a staple memory of the early 90's. This would be the first of two LPs for Mr. Booker. However, Chuckii has maintained numerous production credits in the studio and live. Having been the musical director for Janet Jackson's Rythmn Nation 1814 tour. Chuckii also produced New Jack Swing pop sensation Troop, as well soul artist Lalah Hathaway. Chuckii can be spotted all over the music industry today, as a producer or musical director.

More Chuckii 12" to follow, enjoy. Posted first is the delicious Ramsey Lewis rip, Salongo. This record was engraved in my brain head as a child. Every Saturday morning my father would play this record, then I'd watch American Gladiators on Fox at noon. Produced by Maurice White, this album carries the weight of a Earth Wind and Fire, mix, but with notable CTI arranging. Aufu Oodo, stands the test of time as being one of the greatest funk tunes I have ever heard. Salongo, is completely seperated from all over Ramsey records. This is the only record that he truly allows the synth to be as angry as it's potential. Do yourself a favor and grab this record today.
